S.A.F.E.R. Horsemanship Facility Accreditation & Barn Compliance Program

The S.A.F.E.R. Horsemanship Facility Accreditation & Barn Compliance Program was created to help equestrian facilities build safer, more structured, and more confidence-driven environments for both horses and humans.

This program is not about policing barns or creating unrealistic standards.

It is about encouraging thoughtful horsemanship, safety awareness, professionalism, humane handling practices and consistent educational environments throughout the equine industry.

At S.A.F.E.R. Horsemanship, we believe safer environments create stronger partnerships between horses and humans.

Get in Touch

What Is S.A.F.E.R. Accreditation?

S.A.F.E.R. Accreditation is a voluntary facility recognition program designed to help barns, lesson programs, camps, equine-assisted programs, homeschool programs, and equestrian organizations strengthen:

  • safety awareness,
  • emergency preparedness,
  • horse handling protocols,
  • educational structure,
  • and overall professionalism.

Facilities participating in the program work toward maintaining clearly defined standards that support safer and more welcoming equine environments for riders, families, staff, volunteers, and horses.

Why It Matters

The equine industry is built on passion, tradition, and experience, but safety procedures and educational standards can vary greatly from one facility to another.
For many newcomers, parents, homeschool families and beginner riders, it can be difficult to understand:

  • what safety measures should exist,
  • what structured learning looks like,
  • or how to evaluate a horse facility.

The S.A.F.E.R. Accreditation concept was developed to help create greater awareness, consistency, and confidence within equestrian environments.

Building Safer, Stronger Equine Environments

S.A.F.E.R. stands for:

Safe

Achievable

Fun

Effective

Respectful

These principles guide not only horsemanship instruction, but also the environments where horses and humans learn together.

A Recognizable Trust Mark for the Equine Industry

Building Safer, Stronger Equine Environments

Our long-term vision is to establish S.A.F.E.R. Accreditation as a recognizable trust mark that reflects a facility’s commitment to:

  • safer horsemanship,
  • structured education,
  • professionalism,
  • humane horse handling,
  • and positive horse-human partnerships.
