Journey back over 75 years to the inception of Farnley Farm, where the enchanting tale of Joan H. Dunning unfolds. A visionary who ignited the flame of passion for ponies, Joan embarked on a daring quest, importing and breeding Welsh Mountain and Dartmoor ponies that would captivate hearts for generations.
In the late 1940s, the torch was passed to her daughter, the dynamic Hetty M-S Abeles, who took the reins and injected a new dimension into Farnley's legacy. With the birth of the "Shenandoah" prefix, Hetty Abeles steered the breeding program towards unprecedented heights.
"In Early 1936, my husband and I went to England to look at various ponies with a view to raising them..." reminisces Joan. With determination in their hearts, they carefully selected three Dartmoor mares and a stallion. Three Welsh mares from iconic studs—Bowdler, Criban, and Coed Coch—joined them on a transatlantic journey, setting the stage for an extraordinary adventure.
1938 witnessed the arrival of the first foal, Farnley Sirius, a stallion of unparalleled magnificence. Despite the scarcity of Welsh mares in the country, Joan's vision laid the foundation for a legacy that would withstand the test of time.
Joan, ever humble, reflects, "I have never been any good at publicity..." Yet, her legacy speaks volumes. The Dartmoors, now forging their own path, and the Welsh, thriving in popularity, stand as a testament to Farnley Farm's enduring impact on the equestrian world.
Today, Hetty Abeles continues to weave the tapestry of Farnley's history, seamlessly blending past and present through the timeless art of pony breeding. Join us in celebrating the indomitable spirit of Farnley Farm—where dreams take flight, and ponies leave an indelible mark on the world!
Step into the enchanting world of Severn Oaks Farm, where the legacy of elegance and excellence began in 1947. Dr. Elizabeth Iliff, a trailblazer with a passion for perfection, laid the foundation with the acquisition of *Coed Coch Ebrill—a Section A Welsh mare that shimmered with promise.
In 1948, the saga continued as Miss Brodrick of the renowned Coed Coch stud in Wales handpicked 9 majestic mares for Mrs. Iliff's vision in Maryland. Among them, *Coed Coch Pansi, *Coed Coch Serog, *Coed Coch Morfa, and *Criban Waaf joined forces with the stellar *Coed Coch Ebrill, forming the bedrock of Severn Oaks' legendary breeding herd.
Fast forward to today, and the magic lives on! The Severn stud, under the expert stewardship of Mrs. Iliff's daughter, Tiz Benedict, continues to produce the epitome of Section A Welsh perfection. Immerse yourself in a realm where quality reigns supreme, with approximately 25 magnificent ponies grazing the lush fields and 2-7 adorable foals entering the world annually.
Severn Oaks Farm isn't just a destination; it's a testament to a timeless legacy. Join us in celebrating the artistry of Section A Welsh breeding, where tradition meets innovation, and the spirit of Severn Oaks gallops into the future!
